"The Granny vigil started on January 14, 2004 to protest the war on Iraq which began March 19,2003 - it was seven months after Bush announced: Mission accomplished!
In the beginning two women (Joan Wile, who started it, and her neighbor) came and now there are at least 20, with Vietnam veterans standing with us... every Wednesday from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at Fifth Avenue and 50 Street, for close to four years.
On October 17, 2005 eighteen of the Granny Peace Brigade were arrested for trying to enlist in the Army to replace young men and women so they could return from Iraq. Each week our signs show the total number of troops killed but there's no way to calculate how many Iraqis have died - we know it's more than 650,000. In addition the war has contaminated 70% of Iraq with radiation from the weapons the US uses made from so-called Depleted Uranium.
Our website www.grannypeacebrigade.org describes our work besides the vigil."

Des grand-mères américaines ont formé un groupe d'actions contre Bush. Elles militent contre l'intervention américaine en Irak et pour le retour des soldats américains. Les "grannies" ont manifesté sur la célèbre 5ème Avenue de New York en septembre 2007.
