Yngwie, Petrucci and Gilbert are all very good guitarists. Technically speaking, Gilbert is the superior to both of them. If you want a real matchup, put Gilbert against Tony MacAlpine or Greg Howe.

When I learned alternate picking,it was pretty difficult,when I got it down I was so happy. But what you can't deny is the note choice and Melodic phrasing of Paul.Combined with his picking style,It emanates that originality he has.

Props to Vai as well.He's my 3rd fav guitarists when it comes to Advanced playing.

But lets be honest here, fast alternate picking isn't actually incredibly hard. I am learning this songs solo at the moment, and i consider my self bad at guitar. Sure mine won't sound clean like Paul's but i still play all the notes. You will find that a lot of guitarist can play like Paul, which doesn't make him unique from other guitarist. Where as Joe and Vai both play differently to most other guitarist, such as Vai's massive whammy bar abuse. But yeah all 3 are great guitarist.

Paul already played with Steve and Joe. Not only di d he hold a candle to those two, but he shined out too. They are all great guitarists dude, but Paul is Paul. You just can't get enough when he does his fast alternate pick runs.:))

I said technically speaking, Paul is superior. I love both Petrucci and Gilbert, but Petrucci is more fitting in a band than as a stand alone guitarist. Petrucci makes beautiful, enchanting, epic music while Gilbert is more of a solo guy. Both of them are guitar gods, but Gilbert is the most technically impressive of the two.

Petrucci makes great music, Gilbert does great shows.
