The city has reinstated some individuals specifically so that they have the opportunity to resign. Any others who want to go back to work have still received no word nearly a year later.

CHRONOLOGY:

Aug. 23 & 24, 2012 - Lifeguards recorded clips
Aug. 26, 2012 - RoaBoat created and uploaded the video
Sept. 5, 2012 - Lifeguards were fired
Sept. 18, 2012 - Lifeguards attend a city council meeting with over 200 supporters
Sept. 18, 2012 - The mayor calls for an investigation of the aquatic center and management
Oct. 2, 2012 - Lifeguards were officially put on city council meeting's agenda for voting
Oct. 16, 2012 - City council passes motion to recommend reinstating lifeguards
Nov. 30, 2012 - Some lifeguards reinstated for purpose of resigning
Feb. 2013 - Investigation ends, no action has been taken yet

The city of El Monte clearly has no sense of humor or common sense. Instead of firing the lifeguards, they should have gotten raises for bringing such favorable publicity to the city. People would be flocking in from all over to use the pool and see the lifeguards from this fabulous video. Instead, all they're getting is bad publicity. Neither the public nor the city were harmed in any way by the making of this video. The gov't there is obviously a bunch of humorless, shortsighted, idiots.

i am a lifeguard too and I swim 7 kilometers for training per week!if you re a lifeguard and you re training as one,you can't be so fat..you know it for yourself don't you?have you ever seen a fat swimmer??this man got certified as a lifeguard by a who knows lifeguard school by paying a lot or he had a friend(if you know what I mean)!

Aaaaaah!! I loved that video SO much!!! I agree that nobody should have gotten fired, I'm an aquatic supervisor for my facility and highly encourage my staff to have fun like this during there off time and breaks....way to go guards, that rocked my socks!

really you wanta bet on that because i am a lifeguard an i know the swim test to get certified is 100free100breast100mix NOSTOPING! i also know that were i work we are required to swim a minimum of 500m for every shift we work granted half the guards were i work can do that in about 6min because we are on the local swim team + the work outs we have to do as a life guard i personally go in once a week and swim a 256lb dummy for 25 laps in 25m pool no tube then i have to stow him. so i bet he can.

do you live in El Monte? people do not get shot everyday.. in the 5 years that I lived there i never witnessed a shooting, heard gunshots, or knew anyone who was shot in El Monte. yes there are gangs but you exaggerated with the violence!
