Looks like that plane was over-loaded! Barely able to clear the runway.
-
They were built as an air ferry to transport cars and passengers across the English Channel.

This is so ugly. It has to be British. In fact, now when I looked it up, it actually is British :-D.

@Proplinerman Great to see a video of such a unique aircraft, thanks for posting it.

Do a google maps search for these coordinates. Then click on satellite view 67°1'16.63"N 146°31'53.51"W You can see the wreckage of this plane there.

Im no aircraft expert, but Ive got photos of them before conversion to the ATL Carvair, and they looked like a regular aeroplane. I believe it was Ansett Australia that had them converted for hauling freight. A couple of these planes ended up in New Zealand during the eighties hauling cars for Nationwide Air (part of the Car Haulaways group),but after a few problems with the Govt. of the day they went into receivership, sold, and one of them crashed in Alaska,I heard it was hauling fuel to the mines

@TravellinOn2010 Yes, the Carvair was a conversion of the DC-4, done by Aviation Traders Engineering Ltd in England in the 1960s. I think the one that crashed in Alaska was this aircraft.

This one later crashed and only one or two now survive. I don't think either are flying, but I could be wrong.
