Freddy was first known for his swing recordings of classical songs such as "Tonight We Love" based on a Tchaikovsky composition, but he was a great tenor saxophonist admired by many jazz musicians including Johnny Hodges who nicknamed him "Mr. Silvertone". He led his own band from the 1930's on which included several famed vocalists including Merv Griffin who later became a very successful tv host and executive. Freddy even served as Elvis Presley's musical director for his first appearance in Las Vegas. In 1948 they recorded a tune called "The Dickey Bird Song" which became one of the big hits of that year, music lost to the ages.
