1969-1971 Rodney Alcala Investigation & Arrest Steve Hodel

This is an April 2, 2010 interview I did with CBS KCAL investigative reporter Stacey Butler re. my original investigation and arrest of serial killer Rodney James Alcala in 1969-1971. In 1969, as a LAPD rookie-detective I was assigned to work with Sgt. Audrey Fletcher, a 25-year veteran, and one of LAPD's finest. At that time, female police officers were not permitted to promote passed the rank of Sergeant. Had Audrey been a man, she probably would have become Chief. She's was that smart!

What?? The cops walked into his apartment and there was an 8 year old girl lying nude, head bleeding, with a steel bar laying there also--"Alcala got away"--How did that happen??

A suspicious neighbor called the police and they doorknocked Alcala's rental. He looked out the front window saw the cops and said, "Be right with you." He then split out the back and after a few minutes the cops kicked in the front door and then found the victim unconscious and bleeding and he was "in the wind."

They called an ambulance and saved her life.

Was he already a serial killer before appearing on the dating game?

@Nomoreidsleft Yes. He killed women in 1977 and appeared on the Dating Game in 1978. Victims both prior to his appearance and after.

I love this country, but we sure do seem to have the dumbest, (& laziest) law enforcement in the world. The dude got away after he was busted for bludgeoning and rape of this poor little girl. Then they found him 2yrs later, and he served only 34 months?! Insane! That almost makes me sick to my stomach. Back then [and probably today], rapists and murderers served months, while burglars/drug dealers served years. It is the most backwards stupid thing in the world. Baffles me.
