A very precise, thorough and workman-like conductor; I only really know him from his Czech Phil. recordings of Dvorak's Symphonies 5,6 & 8. (Eight, from a compositional standpoint should have been scrapped; it's hardly one of Dvorak's best.)
He doesn't inject enough detail and variety into repetitious portions of the music though his basic ideas are generally quite sound and very well executed.

I am playing this over and over every day, reading the mini-score, I bought long time ago in Vienna. It's fun watching him - brings back all the memories and fact is that THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER VACLAV NEUMANN. How lucky we are to have this! There was one more conductor who really got to me - Charles Munch! Have to look him up. He conducted Ravel in Brno and stole my heart also!

Ari, I am the happiest guy I sent this to you. Just imagine my luck
watching my friend Vaclav for 6 years rehearsing Brno STATE PHILHARMONICS
and seeing him conducting most of the gala concerts! (Fifties)
In my heart, he was the best and just ordered NAXOS DVD and he DID die young. Only 75! But his art will live FOREVER! Right Eric - nobody can tech this!

So, this is how perhaps the greatest conductor got orchestras to do such amazing things. I had to watch it several times, and then I understood. Nobody can teach this, except by doing it.
