HUGE JUNKYARD FIRE WITH EXPLOSIONS

On 9-27-09 GFD toned out for a reported box alarm in a junkyard just after 2pm, the header was visible from Porter County Indiana. Multiple lines were used along with aerial ladders to extinguish the fire after Firefighters gained entry to the property. Crews were on scene into the next day pouring thousands of gallons of water on the 200x200 100 foot tall pile of crushed car parts. Investigators reported the fire was due to spontaneous combustion. Mutual aid companies From Merrillville, Lake Ridge, and Portage assisted with Gary Station Coverage.
