Crowned by illustrator Charles Dana Gibson as being the "living version" of his "ideal woman" referring to his famous Gibson Girl drawings, Camilla Antoinette Clifford, born in Antwerp, Belgium, 1885, was a silent stage actress and singer by age 17 in 1902 when she first performed in the broadway production "The Defender." By 1904, after she was cast in the British musical comedy "The Prince of Pilsen", her incredible physical dimensions brought her tremendous attention and easily won her the Gibson Girl Lookalike contest sponsored by the famous Illustrator Charles Dana Gibson himself.
Her long, beautiful gowns, elaborate coiffured hairdos, and her tight-laced, 18 inch waist were her enduring trademarks which forever defined the Gibson Girl style of the Edwardian period.
*Though her stage career was comparatively brief, (only 4 years) she succeeded nonetheless in owning a successful stable of fine racehorses after her retirement from show business.
*Her first child, Margaret, born in 1909, died only five days after her birth.
*Camille died shortly after her 86th birthday in 1971, survived by her son, the Welsh Guards Captain Robert Victor John Evans.

In 1901, when Anna Taylor went over Niagara Falls in a barrel, and Carry Nation sold miniature hatchets in the Senate gallery, the "Gibson Girl" saw these revolutionary gestures as what they were - symptons of neurosis and impendind decline.

"Gibson Girl" had dignity, a quality woman. She read dignified historical novels like "To Have and To Hold" and "When Knighthood Was in Flower". She was an aristocrat and a sticlker for gallant behavior. Her appearance was proud and haughty, suggesting that she was a prize worth make some effort to win. Her clothing covered her from neck to heels but without any suggestion of puritanism, Gibson Girl had no stomach at all.

Without a doubt, Camille Clifford was the most beautiful "Gibson Girl" of that time!!!

18 inch waist... wow... might be a little small for my taste. Certainly Camilla is a beautiful woman, especially sense you breathed life into her. Wonderful work Mell, wonderfully interesting. 5***** + favorite.
