About five billion people living in emerging countries are unconnected or have only limited access to the worldwide communication infrastructure. This imposes boundaries on their education, health and economic opportunities. Thus Fraunhofer FOKUS has established NET4DC, the Fraunhofer Center for ICT in Developing Countries. This initiative is aiming to provide technologies to include people in the global e-communication arena -- even in rural, emerging and developing areas.
When fixed line infrastructures are not available, wireless links are an option for fast deployment at very low cost. While today's deployments are typically of small size, Fraunhofer's WiBack Technology (Wireless Backhaul) targets carrier grade service provisioning in very large wireless networks. Deployment scenarios range from "last-mile" service provisioning in developed countries to wide-area coverage (hundreds of square kilometers) in emerging areas.
