For many years, I've been an active member in the queer community. I'm also the founder of the first LGBTQ Community Centre in Hong Kong. As activist, I participated in local social movements and democratic movement. I got to meet a lot of people and made lots of friends. Life has not been easy for me. So I'm grateful for the support I got from friends and family. Including friends that I have known for years, and newly acquaintances.
I have to thanks this young man who has inspired me to do this. If I didn't watched him on Youtube, He is the first person who started the Free Hugs movement in Hong Kong. I don't think I would be standing here today.
Today I want to talk about the "Free hugs" movement that is inclusive of all races, nationalities, genders, and age. I think it transcends social boundaries. It reminds us that we need to show that we care for those around us, including those who are suffering from illness.
Let the world know about this movement. Let the world know that we are capable of love. Can we do that?
According to recent survey published on a newspaper, sixty percent of Hong Kong people think people living with AIDS should be in hiding, They should not go to work or go to school. (They should be quarantined) Let me ask.... What about person like me, who has been battling with AIDS for the last twelve years?
I'm currently quite physically fit, and am now working and studying part-time.
Should I go into hiding? Should I stop going to work? And stop my studies?
There are known AIDS cases in Hong Kong for more than twenty years. Why people persisted having such prejudice and discriminative attitude toward persons living with AIDS?
If you've never met with a person living with AIDS, If you've never hugged a person with AIDS before, Then by what evidence have you based on when judging a person living with AIDS as menace? How can you tell people living with AIDS not to go to work or go to school?
Come over. Come over and hug me as they do. Come and have a "free hug" for AIDS.
By doing this, you're not just hugging me. You're also hugging the more than three thousand people in Hong Kong who is living with AIDS, and who are unable to come out. Although they cannot be here with us today, I hope that everyone can give me a hug, because by doing so you're giving hugs to the more than three thousand who cannot be here with us.
You can communicate your message of love. AIDS could not be transmitted through hugs. You could transmit your love through actions. Hug a person living with AIDS. (Many patients) are not as fortunate as me, who got a lot of caring and support from people around me.
Action is very important. Express your love through your action. Let the world knows, and let the people of Hong Kong know that we are full of love. Let them know we're not just giving lip services to terms like equality and love. We are not just saying we don't discrimination against people living with AIDS; we are actually committing ourselves and put it into action.
Hug me! Hug a person living with AIDS. Shall we? If I'm bold enough to stand here! You should be bold enough to give me a hug! Don't be afraid! Don't be shy! AIDS cannot be transmitted through hugging. You cannot get AIDS by hugging people living with AIDS. Hugging will only transmit the message of love, warmth, equality and peace.
I knew that many people have attended the Franklin Graham evangelical meeting and that Hong Kong Stadium was packed with people. I'm gay, I'm living with AIDS, and at the same time I'm Christian. I'm also grateful to the Lord. Twelve years ago, I prayed that I would live for ten years more. Now, twelve years later, I'm still alive and kicking. It is my belief that there will be another twelve years, and another twelve years after that. Glory to Jesus Christ the Lord! Hallelujah.
Come and give me a big hug! Your willingness to hug me is not just a hug. It attests your love. Thank you everyone. Thank you. I will continue to work for the cause. I won't give up! See you again next year.
