As I am currently done with all the NES robot masters speed-run wise (barring MM9 ones, which I can't record, but have sped run and do enjoy), I thought I would do some videos explaining the different weapons in the Mega Man series and rating them. A few viewers of my speed runs commented that I was using Mega Man's powers in ways they weren't aware of, and I just thought I'd share what I know, so to speak.

This is of course the first Mega Man game, which has a couple of real gems of weapons, a couple clunkers, and a couple interesting utilities. Things are still pretty basic; you cannot do very much to experiment with these. This was their first attempt though and it was over 20 years ago, so we can forgive them for not getting the balance right.

I will rate the weapons and utilities on a ten point scale, with the middle being as useful as the normal pellet shot (is that what the P stands for?), and lower or higher being more or less useful in more situations, etc. Obviously the utilities can't be compared to the weapons, so I'll rate them among themselves, basically. I hope you enjoy!

You probably should have had an onscreen recap of the scores at the end.

  • Good review on the weapons. Though I do think the Ice Slasher is a really nice weapon even though it doesn't deal direct damage.

One thing I'd like to mention is how these weapons were changed in the PSP remake, MM Powered Up. The Hyper Bomb is far more useful, since it explodes on contact, but the Fire Storm and Thunder Beam got nerfed; they use way more energy, and I'm not sure they deal as much damage as before.

  • hyper bomb is good on gutsman you just need timing

  • I agree almost a 100% with all ratings. Except Rolling Cutter. Think that one should be slightly lower than 3. It's useful for beginners. But not in the long phase. Yeah, it shreds Elec Man and the rolling skater's. But both can easily be manipulated by the buster. Nice idea you got here. Looking forward to MM 5! I def need to learn more about those weapons:-)
