The Salvation Army Song - Judy Henske, performed Live somewhere, some time in the sixties. This was always a favorite with drag queens who used to mime to this selection. But straight or gay, you can sing along -- and have fun doing it.

  • I was a kid about 9 or 10, and my older siblings had "High Flying Bird" and the Whiskey Hill Singers albums. Her version of "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out" is what sticks in my my. "The Salvation Army Song" is great, especially live.

Some fifty years after first hearing her has given me perspective. Judy is essentially a blues/jazz singer, and a great one. If Electra had seen this early on, instead of just riding the folk craze, she would have had a much longer run.

  • Criss Cross did a hilierous version of this in the early 70's at my bar (watch your hat & coat saloon in Nashville, Tn.) Had'nt heard it in years...

  • I had the record but could not afford to get the record back to Canada...My whole record collection completely gone because I was not given money to move after my husband died. I love Judy Henske...I think her personality enhanced her talent . Very gutsy singer.

  • I grew up listening to this album too. My memory says it was recorded at the Icehouse in Pasadena.

  • In the seventies at the gay bar Unicorn in Baltimore, Captain Jack used to do this song as part of a drag show and dress as a Salvation Army lady. It was great. He used to make a few bucks during the chorys when the whole bar would throw nickles and dimes at Jack. Most trying to hit him. He was a beloved patron and I iss him and those times.

  • My mom used to have this album - if I remember the liner notes correctly, this was recorded at The Purple Onion. Not sure of the year though. Thanks for posting it!

  • Coolest lady ever ... and this is one of the songs that made me who I am today, a happy little born-again Gnostic . . .

  • I can't stop laughing, lol

  • @sankow2 Wow is right, because this is a fact that she does not know who started The Salvation Army, or what country is its international headquarters, she thinks The Salvation Army was started in the United States, and she is wrong! The Salvation Army was started by a gentleman by the name of William Booth, and was started in London in the United Kingdom of Great Britain on the Isle of England, and William Booth was their first General!
