Did we all build and kill ourselves on those things. Mine had woven cotton lanyards to steer with. I remember the first time i saw a for real, soap box racer, I thought it was just too technical for me. My dad built a sort of club brake that had a bracket to hold it to the racer body. Whenever I applied it, it felt like the ground was grinding the brake to pieces. Well, it was, so I had to fasten part of an old rubber tire on it. Pretty soon I spent all my time fixing and no time riding.
