Compare an antmimicking spider (Myrmarachne japonica) with an ant, both feeding independently on a little moth in the same enclosure. The mimicry is not for hunting ants in disguise but for making a bluff to defend itself from predators.
Music : Wolfstone - Braes Of Sutherland

  • forgive my ignorance... but how is the spider benefiting from mimicking an ant? thats like mike tyson mimicking a ballerina

  • that was a very good question.

in the bug's world, ants are feared very much by others.

    thx 4 watching!

  • @sigma1920 I also wonder why spiders dont have communities like ants... a frightening thought... spider mounds popping up nationwide!

  • @millball

    that is an interesting thought!

just search "social spider" at wikipedia.

and check out my vid about some spiderlings' mass hunting on a communal web.

  • i thought spiders drink the fluid not eat the whole prey

  • u are right.

that's one of the big differences between insects (such as ants) and spiders.

this spider seemed to toy around with the prey looking for a juicier part to bite into.

  • It's more like a puma mimicing a wolf, actually. The theory is that ant mimicing spiders evolved in areas with a lot of ants that would become potential predators, and though not fool-proof the disguise would help prevent attacks from starting.

  • yeah, he is my hero, too.

and kudos to the camera crews.

  • Haha. I knew I had seen it!

On a side note, I grew up watching Attenborough. He's awesome.
