  • Which groups or albums would people recommend if you are just looking for typically quintessential English music?

  • @jmsbk12345 You could try "Folk Songs of Old England" vol. 1 & 2 by Maddy Prior and Tim Hart of Steeleye Span. Good albums.

  • I'm sorry, but I really hate this version.

It ruined the beauty of the song.

  • Perhaps you could name a version you like better so we could check it out? I like to hear as many versions as I can of my favorite tunes.

  • beautiful fiddle playing and singing

  • @jmsbk12345 I would recommend you check out Cecil Sharp who was a collector of British ballads (Cecil Sharp House, London), He was the equivalent of Francis Child (Child ballads) who collected ballads in the USA. They are both featured on utube. The best collections of British and USA ballads. Hope this helps.

  • There was a video, since gone, with barely mediocre sound quality, of an amazing version of this song 1997 with a great Woods/Prior performance.

I would consider that the best version of all time.

  • You are all too picky! Appreciate it for what it is. Pure and folksy, I think! Also takes me back to my youth - that becomes important! Mu x

  • @OrlopRat42 Me too, prefer the original track with the deep bass.

  • @transferXmofts ........the version by Newfoundland singer Pamela Morgan is gorgeous (on her CD Ancestral Songs)...don't know if you can find it where you are but you will never hear the song the same way again

  • @OrlopRat42 Steeleye Span have released at least 4 versions of Thomas through the years; 'Now We Are Six' (long version) in the UK, 'Now We Are Six' (short version) in the US, at least one live version, and a new one on 'Present - The Very Best of Steeleye Span'.

Most people are familiar with the short version from Now We are Six that was released as a single. It has a sharper intro and more edgy rock beat - you'll find it at: watch = D4IMtejYZgE

  • I love all songs of Steeleye Span
