A quick demo of Demon Attack running on an IBM PCjr ...

Imagic ported Demon Attack to the PCjr in late 1983 or early 1984. It is a basic "shoot any alien that moves" type of game with pretty decent graphics and excellent sound. This demo shows the cartridge version of the game which works on any PCjr including those without a diskette drive. Space on the cartridge is in short supply so Imagic could not put a title screen up before the game starts!

The game looks much better on a real RGB monitor. This capture was taken from the composite port on the back of the machine which is better than shooting a camera at the screen but not as good as the RGB signal.

  • Cool. I didn't realize a PCjr version existed, or that the PCjr was capable of graphics and sound this good. The mothership looks especially impressive, better than the Intellivision version even.

  • @uzi9millimetuh Demon Attack is using the 160x200 16 color mode which is supported in BIOS on the PCjr but not on normal CGA machines. PCjrs with 128K on board can also do 320x200 in 16 colors or 640x200 in 4 colors, which requires twice the memory that a normal CGA equipped machine has for the video buffer. Sound is provided by a 3 voice TI chip with a white noise generator.

You should see older versions of MS Flight Simulator - having the extra colors really helps.

  • @mbbrutman Impressive. Yeah, I was expecting CGA graphics and tinny sounds squawking through a PC speaker. Graphically, this looks pretty much like the Commodore 64 version.

  • For some reason, that looks awfully fun! Is there an MS-DOS version of this? Would love to play it on my 5150.

  • Man, that brought back memories, I used to have that game, loved it. I remember buying the PC Jr because Bill Gates supposedly said that 640K memory comment, and IBM claimed they would support it, sure proves there's a lot of lies around. I did enjoy my PC Jr though, went to BBS places at a blazing 300 Baud !
