At the end of Durga Puja, the idols of Goddess Durga and her children (Ganesha, Lakshmi, Saraswati and Karthik), are submerged in the sacred Ganges. The distributary of the Ganges flowing by Calcutta is the Hooghly, and so all idols from the city are immersed in the Hooghly. This video, and parts II, III, show the idol immersion of S R Das Rd Tarun Sangha Puja.
The people carrying the idols are usually day laborers who are paid to do the heavy lifting.
