Three out of four of the Mamas and Papas grew up in areas with cold winters. The Beach Boys for the most part grew up in California. The "enchanting quality," as another poster put it, of the mamas and papas version comes from their having spent their formative years freezing for half or more of the year. I don't think a bunch of guys from the Sun Belt could ever recapture that, however skillfully they might execute the technicalities of the song
