When Jake and Paulina decided to get married in 1991, love wasn't even a consideration. Jake needed money to re-establish himself after losing everything following his shooting and subsequent four-month coma; Paulina was the one who pulled the trigger and was desperate not to go to jail, plus she had a sizable inheritance from her late father Mac Cory. So Jake struck a deal with Paulina: marry him, share her inheritance with him, and he would give her a signed statement that a burglar shot him, not Paulina. Even though this meant Paulina had to break things off with Grant Harrison, she agreed. But after the "I do"s, Jake found himself falling in love with his new wife...something Paulina didn't pick up on, causing her to wonder why he was acting like a jealous husband when they were only married because of a deal.
