Ahmad Shah Massoud became known as the "Lion of Panjshir" during the Soviet war in Afghanistan leading resistance fighters in north-eastern Afghanistan. The Wall Street Journal eventually called him "the Afghan who won the cold war". After the fall of the communist regime in Afghanistan, Massoud became minister of defense of the Islamic State of Afghanistan under the Peshawar Accords. After the rise of the Taliban, Massoud created the United Front (known as Northern Alliance), which united members of all Afghan ethnicities and backgrounds, to defend areas not under Taliban control and to oppose the Pakistani-backed Taliban regime. The National Geographic ultimately concluded: "The only thing standing in the way of future Taliban massacres is Ahmad Shah Massoud." Massoud repeatedly told the Taliban to join a peaceful political process with the ultimate goal of democratic elections, so the Afghans could choose their government for themselves. The Taliban declined. In early 2001, on a visit to Europe, Massoud warned about an unspecified attack on U.S. soil being imminent. Massoud was assassinated on September 9, 2001, two day before the attacks of September 11, 2001. Massoud was a deeply spiritual and religious person, reportedly always carrying Al-Ghazali's "Alchemy of Happiness" with him. At the same time he rejected the Taliban and Saudi Wahhabi interpretation of Islam. He was declared National Hero of the Afghan Nation by the order of the post-Taliban government and nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

@kid0147 Panjshir had 130,000 people during that time. The video does not state that 1.5 million Panjshiris died but instead that 1.5 million people in the whole of Afghanistan died. In the whole of Afghanistan Tajiks, Pashtuns, Hazara and others fought. Still, Massoud by many is considered the most capable of all the resistance fighters and he was the only major Afghan leader who actually always stayed inside Afghanistan during the war while others were directing their forces from safe haven.

One of the qualities of a good leader is a strong clear vision and the ability to convey it. You need to understand where you want to lead your people, how you plan to get them there, and the ability to communicate this destination to your people. The Great Massoud was able to do that admirably. He was my leader, is my leader, and will always be. Massoud e Aziz, you are the one and only hero Afghanistan has ever had.

@kid0147 most of massouds top lietenants were pashtuns , massoud was simply the best leader and the most effective leader but all over afghanistan there were many brave pashtuns, hazara's, uzbeks etc fightin the soviets 2 but massoud was simply to great even though he didnt really have as much supplies as gulbuddin or dostem or any others , massoud is a national hero

Foreigners give respect to Masoud but some Afghans dont. I dont know how u can hate a man who saved the rights and lives of millions of Afghans. Doesn't matter where from Afghanistan your from, you have to respect Masoud for saving the country.
