Permethrin is an insecticide used in shampoos, sprays and spot-on flea treatments for dogs. Many spot-on flea products containing permethrin are popular because of their ease of use, relative low cost and wide availability from local pet stores and supermarkets. Unfortunately, it is extremely poisonous to cats and this is the topic for this video podcast.

  • Another way cats can be exposed to permethrin is from a human owner who has used a skin treatment for lice or scabies and then handled the cat. Common OTC and prescription products don't mention this in the product insert!

  • I created this petition, "Dangerous Pet Products! Stop the use of highly dangerous pesticides in pet products!!!" and wanted to see if you could help by adding your name.

Our goal is to reach 10,000 signatures (or more) and we need more support. You can read more and sign the petition here: change . org then search for "Dangerous Pet Products! Stop the use of highly dangerous pesticides in pet products!!!"

Dam YouTube would NOT let me put a direct link!

    Thanks!

  • MY cat has pyrethrin poisening atm we have been in and out of vets for the last three days she is on methacarbamol! is there anything i can do to help her get better!

  • PLEASE DO NOT USE ANY HARTZ FLEA DROPS ON YOUR CHIHUAHUA. MY BABY OF NEARLY 19 YEARS OF AGE HAD A HORRIBLE REACTION TO IT, AND THE VET TOLD ME THAT I WAS FORTUNATE HE WAS ALIVE AT ALL AFTER SUCH. I'M SO OVER-WHELMED WITH SORROW AFTER LOSING PEPPER, GREATER SORROW THAN LOSING ANY HUMAN IN MY LIFE. WHY DON'T PEOPLE BAN TOGETHER AND CLASS ACTION LAW SUIT HARTZ?

  • Permethrin is the active ingredient in flea and tick collars specifically for cats sold in Canada. The effect this has on a cat is very serious and requires immediate care by a vet specializing in cat toxicity.

  • what about permethrin dust that you can put on vegetables?? Would that be also be poisionous?

  • I would like to have seen a video of a cat showing the typical signs of permethrin toxicity- maybe you could video the next case you see and add this into the middle of the podcast video?

otherwise a very good discussion of permethrin toxicity - well done!
