  • A couple of updates. The original yellow trap phasing during some trials as shown here did not include a yellow clearance interval based on the assumption that the flashing yellow arrow meant a non-protected turn. However the final MUTCD specs called for a standard yellow clearance indication between the green arrow and flashing yellow arrow. Currently there are studies underway regarding retroffiting of doghouses to also use the flashing yellow arrow.

  • The new 2009 MUTCD was published 12/16/2009 and contains the FYA.

  • Yep. Doghouses will no longer be installed over, or to the left of, left turn pockets. Protected / Permissive left turns will be 4 in-line heads with flashing yellow arrows. (For readers of Mudimush's post, "FYA" = flashing yellow arrow.) Also the short clearance is only supposed to occur in the field signal when opposing traffic is red although I'll check. Clearance interval duration is a critical issue to consider, however.
