In Ukraine, the trial use of electronic text books in schools is stimulating debate. Our correspondents in Kyiv get to grips with the e-book, and discover if it really can displace its traditional paper counterpart. Here's more.

"All of this literature easily fits in an e-book. Soon, this scientific achievement will greatly facilitate the learning process for Ukrainian schoolchildren."

The Ministries of Education, Science, Family, Youth and Sports are seriously considering how these electronic books can help students.

Trials in five schools have provided positive results.

For those who enjoyed the marvel books, more was learned, and in less time.

[Alexande Udod, Director of IT Institute]:
"The research showed that students received more information at certain stages of the lesson, especially during the explanation of new material and when setting homework. They could also more easily check this information."

The device contains about 10 thousand books, easily the whole curriculum for each year in school.

According to doctors, the screen of the device is eye-safe, and unlike paper books you can wash it.

[Nadezhda Polka, Deputy Director, Institute of Hygiene and Medical Ecology]:
"The leaves of the book have been used by different generations throughout the years; they can store agents of infectious diseases, in particular bacterium tuberculosis."

School librarian Nina Vasilievna believes that for all their value, e-books cannot compare to their paper counterparts.

[Nina Burumenskaja, School Librarian]:
"In my opinion, there is no spirit in it. Books must be felt not only by the hands but also by the heart. With the e-book there is no communication with the author. Also, with a traditional book, each time it is read, something remains of the reader, a kind of energy."

Oksana Borisovna teaches Ukrainian language and literature, and her class participated in the e-book trial.

She says the main advantage of e-books is that the entire curriculum can be loaded into them... but the downside, you can't use a highlighter on them.

[Oksana Makovetskaya, Lecturer, Ukrainian Language and Literature]:
"You can make notes, but you can only copy the entire page; I do not need a whole page, I only need one line or paragraph."

The developers of the electronic textbook say they will take into account the comments of pupils and teachers to develop a new, improved version.

[Oleg Denisyuk, Director of "PocketBook" in Ukraine]:
"You can open multiple books or some paragraphs at once. And in the screen there is a picture of the two pages or two different textbooks. It's more speedy. You can touch the screen in order to input some data and readout it more quickly. You can also write notes."

Developers are also planning to make a color version of the e-book.

If further trials prove successful, such devices will soon be used widely in classrooms alongside paper textbooks.

  • They would be wise to simply license the "Kno" software and port it to their device. Kno Corp has already done many years of research and development and have gone through at least one year of trials and improvements... including highlighting.
