MAD GIRLS LOVE SONG

I shut my eyes and all the world drops dead;
I lift my lids and all is born again.
(I think I made you up inside my head.)

The stars go waltzing out in blue and red,
And arbitrary blackness gallops in:
I shut my eyes and all the world drops dead.

I dreamed that you bewitched me into bed
And sung me moon-struck, kissed me quite insane.
(I think I made you up inside my head.)

God topples from the sky, hells fires fade:
Exit seraphim and Satans men:
I shut my eyes and all the world drops dead.

I fancied youd return the way you said,
But I grow old and I forget your name.
(I think I made you up inside my head.)

I should have loved a thunderbird instead;
At least when spring comes they roar back again.
I shut my eyes and all the world drops dead.
(I think I made you up inside my head.)

--Sylvia Plath

  • Thank you David. At the moment my poetry is going nowhere, I'm dryer than the Kalahari desert. Listening to this brilliant fluid reading helped and it also reinforced my admiration for Sylvia Plath's fine poetry.

    Regards, Peter

  • @nordicsky I hear ya Peter... I am dried up myself... although I have many poems written in my head I can't bring myself to type them. We should skype sometime. I am David.Randall.Curtis on skype :P

  • Brilliant! Your reading reveals and communicates Plath's universal message such acute perspicacity. 5* fav.

  • PoetLina: Thanks for the comment and for the postcard. Mone and me decided not to try and take over your place while you were gallivanting around Europe.

  • Love what you've done with the wall there.

  • Powerfully sardonic here as Plath would have wanted! Light and luck to you in this darker season.

    Cheers, Hunter

  • You are a constant awesomeness.

  • Love how intense you are. Makes it oppositional, argumentative, lashing out, which I really like - it's a fantastic interpretation.

  • That Sylvia was one hell of a women!!

    I dig the background pictures of her too.

  • nice reading. :]

    you did a very good job, so much passion.
