From Oregon - Research published in the Archives of Surgery describes common complications following mastectomy and breast reconstruction. Studying over 300 women who underwent mastectomy, researchers found that roughly 50% of women who underwent immediate breast reconstruction and needed radiation therapy afterwards developed a complication that resulted in a return to the operating room.
From California - A new report published in the Annals of Internal Medicine finds that men and women respond similarly to HIV treatment. Researchers studied over 400 HIV patients, finding that no significant differences in how men and women responded to darunavir and ritonavir.
And finally, from New York - Research published in the Archives of Surgery identifies a predictor of surgical site infection. Studying over 200 patients who underwent surgery, researchers found that high blood sugar following the operation was the most significant predictor of infection.
