This is a re-post of a previous video with new soundtrack.
I visited my friend's karate dojo for sparring class with some of their black belts. I am not wearing any hand protection because I made a rule for myself that I would not do any punching, only trying to defend and control the opponent. My opponents have various levels of training experience ranging from 8 to 14 years, and one of them also has experience with BJJ. I got hit quite a few times, and my opponents' hand protection made wrist techniques pretty much impossible to execute, but I believe these highlights show some of the effective potential of Aikido principles against trained, resisting opponents. This video is NOT intended to assert that Aikido is inherently better than karate or any other art, only that it deserves recognition as a legitimate martial art and viable method of self-defense. Thanks to my fellow martial artists for their hospitality, spirit, and sincere camaraderie.

  • those guys just dont feel like hitting you.it's not because they found the opponent weaker but you dont have any protective gear and since they are used to it they dont want to hurt you badly.next is the fact that karate uses harsh motions that make you cause direct damage while throws cause damage because of the ground.since all this is taking place in a training session they just dont want to hurt an opponent that doesnt punch or kick back.it's only the impression i got but i think it's true.

  • @thethunder7ulti7 You are right. No one was interested in really hurting each other. But I DID get hit many, many times that day.

  • i'm very impressed and you know what? it's rare you find Aikido 'playing nice' or sparring with anyone other than Aikido students and masters. this truly is an original video an impressive display!! any Aikido technique is very dangerous, and normally starts from one direction and progresses to another, a point where the 'fight' is over. and Aikido has you broken and submitting. since all u wanna talk about is IRL. Aikido does not have to let you up after you're broken. nbd

  • @braceforimpact09 Thanks very much.

  • I think this is anything but aikido vs shotokan. Particularly, i think that an expert aikidoka would not a minute compared to an expert in karate. Any aikido technique works in MMA.

  • @youngexplorer Yes, I found it very challenging b/c the karateka just wants to shoot in, tag you, and pop back out, so you have to read him well (I need lots of work on this). My strategy was to close the distance and make them do something, then try to work from there. Some Aikido Shihan I have heard advocate this approach, taking initiative, but I'm not quite sold yet after this. Next time I think I will try to be more patient and draw them into more committed attacks. Thx.

  • @EnsoAikido As an Aikidoist,I appreciate what you try to do,more comparable to other popular martial arts. However, just remember it's a very different adaptation from what Aikido is.We try to adapt to the attack,we do not attack,go in and grab/use force to make the opponent fall/pinned down.Aikido and popular MAs operate under very different assumption.Aikido assume others determined to kill you quickly.Modern MAs assume others try to beat you down. Your direction of adaption might lose to Judo.

  • @ShalKekNemRon It is not knife defense as a problem.I would also like to see you use wresting, karate, judo against an armed opponent, may it be a baseball bat, stick, knife, chair, brick,.. Try go in head first, grab collar or try to kick/punch it out of his hand. It's not the cutting that bad,it is just doesn't work, you may be hurt badly before gaining some advantage. Not to say other MAs are not as good, just saying those were for different purpose and some are better than other in certain aspect

  • @EnsoAikido I've done much the same with my tai chi practice at a friend's karate school that does open sparring. I think it's important to train with many people from many styles (including none at all) to learn how to apply our arts in as many situations as possible. Nicely done. :)

  • aikido wouldnt work against judo

  • @EnsoAikido I practice a few years and we often practice with a karate master.this is not aikido.Always remember that you need to finish the attack in a technique,in the space of a breath, and not fight.O'Sensei said "be strong as thunder, swift as lightning".when we practice with a karateka must be quick, also a student of karate is very rigid and suffers much with joint locks.do not judge your aikido,I do not know, but for sure your approach is wrong to real attack
