you are right i suppose, computing is all about transferrable skills but still i would prefer to learn something up to date
i would also prefer if i didn't have to teach myself... the lecturer is pretty awful

Haha. Why is that so? No question that it is an outdated technology but the fundamentals still remains same. If you can come up with qualities like this one with VRML you will be able to do lot better with other engines and you will start to appreciate and enjoy other ones lot more.
So dont be unhappy with learning it.
