Mexico defeated the United States 4-2 on Saturday, June 25, 2011 at a sold out Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California to win the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Mexico opened the match pressing with high energy, but the US struck first with a Michael Bradley header off of a corner kick in the 8th minute. Steve Cherundolo, the Americans' best defender, exited the match in the 12th minute. His exit dismantled the US backline's chemistry and quality.

Still, the Americans were able to strike once again in the 22nd minute. A sequence of good passes and runs off the ball were finished when Dempsey put Landon Donovan through for a one on one with the goalkeeper. Donovan finished with ease for a 2-0 lead.

From that point on, it was all Mexico.

Barrera was put through on a quality diagonal through pass and slammed it into the low corner. 2-1 in the 29th minute. Just a few minutes later, American defenders were unable to clear a shot from the box and Andres Guardado got a touch off of a rebound to bring the match level in the 35th minute.

The Mexicans kept up the pressure in the second half as Barrera received a pass and unleashed a low swerver to give Mexico the lead in the 49th.

The Americans had chances to draw level, including a shot from Dempsey at the top of the box that hit the crossbar. Their inability to tie the game only fueled the Mexican attack.

Dos Santos finally killed the Americans' hopes with an artful sequence, maneuvering away from a sprawling Tim Howard and floating a curling shot into the upper 90, mere inches too high for Eric Lichaj who was positioned on the line. Dos Santos' goal in the 76th minute sent a majority of the 93,420 in attendance into a frenzy.

  • @zidane81 The 24th place and 28th place teams continue to make the Round of 16 over UEFA teams. How did France do in the last World Cup? Oh, that's right, Mexico beat them. The US always tied England and Slovenia in the route to winning the group over both of them.

Besides, rankings are ridiculous. The US was #5 heading into the 2006 World Cup and they definitely were not a top 5 or even top 10 team.
