As featured on 60 Minutes Wednesday. It is estimated that more than 375,000 Americans with symptoms similar to Alzheimer's and Parkinson's may actually have Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus or NPH. But inlike Alzheimer's or Parkinson's, the pathology of NPH may be treatable. This nine-minute segment was aired on the CBS network as part of the 60 Minutes Wednesday* program. It is reproduced here in its entirety, and is aimed at raising awareness of this little-known neurological disorder.

Dr. Rosseau, CINN Neurosurgeon speaks about NPH and the possibilities of a misdiagnosis for Parkinson's disease or Alzheimer's.

  • I am a relatively fit guy, 48yrs old. At eighteen i had a motorcycle crash ( one of many) and suffered severe headaches whenever i coughed. The crash was blamed and ive had untold numbers of x-rays. Last year i had a dizzy turn, felt ill and was rushed to my local hospital. A CT scan showed my ventricles were huge, ive an Arachnoid Cyst, a Chiari and Hydrocephalus.

Doctors fobbed me off for years.

My surgeon says i am a very rare case, ive got five ventricles. Wating fo this surgey.

  • I have hydrocephalus but was misdiagnosed for years. My symptoms began in 1993. I knew it was a neurological problem but my idiot doctor wouldn't OK an MRI. My condition worsened continually. I finally got an MRI in 2007but then they thought I was a lost cause and refused surgery. (to save money)

They tried to put me on antidepressants and send me home to die.

But I kept fighting and eventually people began to listen.

After 18 years of hell, I'll get shunt surgery next month.

  • Doctors just diagnosed my mother with this. For about 3 years I thought she was suffering from Alzheimer and that my family was slowly losing her. We are awaiting for to have a surgery that can give her back some to most of her independence!

  • Dr. Rekate is an amazing man! He changed my life! He is the closest thing anyone could get to an angel! :)

  • My mother walks exactly like the man in this video. I have read many articles on NPH and she has all the symtoms. Two doctors have told her she has alzhiemers, but she only has a few of `the symptoms. I asked her doctor about having another MIR to check more closely for the possibility of NPH because I just was just having a hard time believeing she has Alzhiemers due to the lack of symtoms and her ability to still think fairly well. MRI showed no signs of NPH. Any suggestions?

  • EVERYONE needs to see this! My mother had NPH. We were lucky that we live in Dallas and the ER doc at UTSoutjwestern recognized it immediately...but it is one of the best hospitals in the country. I am so sad for the misdiagnosed that don't have the care that w have here in Dallas.

  • my mother has just been diagnosed as well. does anyone out there have personal information to share about the results? has it been positive for your mom? do you know of any support groups or blogs? thanks!

  • my mum just had her operation less than 24 hrs ago. she walked like a robot then fell down many times. had incontinence, memory loss, and terrible pain on the head. thanks to the neuro-sugeon who helped our mum. earlier, right after the op, while in the RR, her speech was back, she remembered all her 11 children and some grand children. here is hoping that she will also experience the same recovery as Milton and Bob! Thanks for uploading the video! God bless!
