I don't think I'm the first one to find out, but this was an interesting discovery...

The Impressions - We're A Winner (title track from the '68 album)
The Winstons - Amen, Brother (b-side from the '69 single "Color Him Father")

Thank you.

  • The "original" is actually from the 19th century and I guess nobody knows who composed that, gospel...

Just like "Whiskey In The Jar" is an old irish folk song and not a Metallica or for those who know, a Thin Lizzy song... :D

  • Thanks for the info!

  • You kids :) Amen Brother is old spiritual song that was covered many many times and inspired millions of artists. Dig deeper before you start throwing knowledge.

  • Could you tell me how old the original spiritual is? From the 1800's? Ok, I know little about spirituals but I think that would be a valid guess. Thanks =)

  • its not that the song is copied, its the interpretation.

He is not the first one to notice this, nor are the winstons oblivious, ostensibly.

why would they NOT try and cash out on the amen break?

cause it wasn't theirs. early soul was the same everywhere. thats how motown got by. Dig deeper before you default to condescension.

  • I begin to understand that this video is, well, pretty pointless :) but I'm gonna leave it here... VIEWS VIEWS

  • You're right, that's VERY similar :)

  • That's interesting, I guess Curtis and his buddies wasn't completely unaware of these little things The Winstons did.

  • Oh, sorry.

Also, a little known fact was that the Winstons actually recorded for Mayfield's CURTOM label for awhile before the "Father" song.
