Just found this whilst "Spring Cleaning" my dusty archives.
If my postings are to be truly representative of the jazz scene in the U.K. during the post war years, then this band MUST be among them.
I remember little, bald headed, George with great respect. He introduced me (and many others) to live jazz in those days.
His band, and others at the time, gave us "youngsters" an alternative music scene to that of our parent's generation, who were still very much into the 'big-band' sounds of the war years.

  • SENSATIONAL!!! It's about 1946, isn't it?

  • Yes, I would say 1946/47, or thereabouts.

    Thanks and regards, Clive.

  • The sound of my-ahem,misspent youth,I am afraid.Thank you moleDFigg for this recollection.

  • Thank you for posting this recording. Has any of Mr. Webb's music been reissued?

    Thanks!

    Mike

  • Just read George's obituary in the Telegraph (15/3/10). The Red Barn PH in Barnehurst is my local and where George first started in the 40s.The cellar bar is rarely opened now but there is a plaque on the outside wall commemorating the start of the post-war jazz revival there.

I sometimes met George shopping in the local Morrisons and always made a point of thanking him for the many years of pleasure he had given me. R.I.P George

  • Owen Bryce - Cornet, was a founder member of the George Webb Dixielanders, he still plays a little, but less so in public.

  • Nice one Clive, Humph took over leadership of this band in the early fifties, you are so right this band introduced most of us to this kind of jazz. Thanks Ed

  • I met George last Thursday, 25/9/08, at the Lord Hood pub in Greenwich. He played three numbers with the resident band, and was on great form. Not bad for a gentleman of 91!

  • MoleDFigg, Great stuff! A true classic. Thanks. Regards, J.
