Tim McCrimmon, of IBM, speaks about taking care of IT assets across the entire lifecycle - from procurement through maintenance all the way out to end of life. It is crucial to keep track of where assets are at, who's got them, how well they're being utilized and how much it's costing you to keep and maintain them.

Hi, I'm Tim McCrimmon. I'm the Product Manager for Tivoli's IT Asset Management Portfolio. I manage Tivoli Asset Management for IT product line.

when it comes to IT you tend to think about computers and software, PCs and devices, that kind of thing. But as we look at today's world you may have responsibility for a data center and not only do you have computers and software but you've got air conditioning units and floor tiles and cabling and all those kinds of things. All of those things can be assets.

Tivoli Asset Management for IT has a focus on taking care of your assets across their lifecycle from procurement through maintenance all the way out to end of life and we help you track where they're at, who's got them, how well they're being utilized and how much it's costing you to keep and maintain them We're adding in Software License Management to this so that you can keep track of not only your hardware but the software and its licenses and keep it all in one space so that you can track your expenses that way.

... service management you tend to concern yourself with things like reliability, security, robustness and failover, that kind of thing, making sure that your infrastructure is available when you need it, that it's able to handle spikes and it can morph and absorb changes without impacting its performance or availability, those kinds of things. when you start talking about your business requirements and how they map into what you do inside the infrastructure, an asset tends to be one of those places that you can talk at both ends of the spectrum. We talk about costs. The executives understand cost. When you talk about costs in terms of performance or reliability, then the IT guys tend to understand that as well. So asset tends to be at the center or fulcrum for your service management processes.
