Craig Fuller wrote the song and it was originally released by Pure Prairie League in 1972, it doesn't look like Vince GIll was in the band. I don't have the album, but perhaps Vince did the lead or maybe he did it as a solo. OR, maybe Vince was in the band before he went solo and sang it after Craig did on the original 1972 album/single.

Nope. Craig Fuller wrote it and sang it. Vince Gill joined the band when Fuller was drafted.
