I find working on a novella at the same time as the screenplay works well, you get a lot more detail and backstory in the novella, then you cut it down into a screenplay.

Of course I have not tried to sell one yet, so what do I know. Perhaps you can give a listen to my screenplay here on youtube?

It is big budget, but I have a small budget screenplay if you are interested.
