I recently attended a book event with Mr. Steve "Woz" Wozniak. Mr. Wozniak is credited with contributing greatly to the personal computer revolution of the 1970s. Wozniak co-founded Apple Computer with Steve Jobs in 1976 and created the Apple I and Apple II computers in the mid-1970s. The Apple II became one of the best selling computer of the 1970s and early 1980s, and became a very popular personal computer. In this video, Mr. Wozniak tells how he created "Dial A Joke" and helped with the development of the VCR.
I remember Dial-a-joke well. It helped me through some really bad days at the office. I love Woz.

Cartrivision wasn't the first consumer VCR.
It's a bit of a tossup between Sony U-Matic and Philips "VCR" format.
The U-Matic was originally developed with prototypes in 1969 and production units in 1971. The U-Matic was intended for consumer use, but its high price kept it out of the average home. It did see success in commercial/professional applications, however.
In 1970, Philips released the "VCR" format in Europe, with a market introduction in the U.K. in 1972.
