A two minute ASCII-video anecdote regarding the first time I was caught hacking. During our sophomore year in high school my friend Seth and I became distraught by the teen trend of randomly mixing upper and lowercase letters in America Online member profiles. We found it ugly and headache inducing. Something had to be done...

Creating the video was a multi-step process. First actual footage was shot and edited together along with stills such as the AOL logo. The rendered video was sliced into desaturated JPEGs at 10 FPS. (Audio was exported as separate clips.) These JPEGs were then processed by a custom written PHP script for compiling ASCII gradient stills into a text file. This text file was then edited according to a custom built markup language which allowed for calling audio files, altering character wrap, and directly editing the ASCII. The finished package runs live from a Mac Terminal window. It has been documented as a QuickTime movie via motion screen captures.
