Great action ...But why do they have a diesel attached, can't the steamer do the job on it's own?

Thanks, those ex class 25's were known as 'Ethels' (Electric Train Heating Expired Locomotive) were to provide heating on carriages such as these which did not have steam heating. The 'Ethels' were much despised by enthusiasts. You still see diesels attached, usually thankfully at the rear, to provide assistance with shunting stock at a terminus and occasionally for heating when there is no generator van in the train
