(a) No US soldier WANTS to remain in Iraq. Nobody hates their family back home that much.

(b) It's not the military's call in the first place. We have a civilian leadership of the army, and the army's job is to follow the orders of that leadership.

IRT Libya, any semblance of "leading from the front" - like McCain is talking about - was quashed* by several members of Congress threatening action against the President under the War Powers Act (which I believe is a resolution, actually).
* Actually, 1) some tentative actions WERE taken... then withdrawn... when 2) Obama showed his actions weren't of the nature that could be prosecuted... which 3) they WOULD have been in McCain's scenario.
