Actually, the name refers to the women who were forced into prostitution in the German death camps during WW2. Joy Division is a translation of Freudenabteilung.

@kedgwell. Thanks. They were called Stiff Kittens, then Warsaw, then settled for Joy Division in '77/78, as there was a London band called ' Warsaw Pakt'.
