I was doing the regular long Sunday morning dog walk from the other side of the town where I live, to the moor today. I noticed that a lot of the maisonettes in the Ravenscroft, Hunter Drive, dickson Drive area are empty. I remembered hearing that they are coming down at some time soon so I thought I'd video them later on in the day when I was out in the car, before they do.

Some parts of the video are a little bit dark, due to the sky being bright on a cloudy day. This confused the unsophisticated lightmeter in my Nokia 6303 a little, causing it to underexpose.

I hope to revisit the area soon and will try to find time to do a driveby with my Panasonic Lumix TZ9, to record the area in better quality.

  • Before it was built on it was only a large field. You could walk across it and get too Irvine Meadow football park and climb the wall. I don't think anybody would take a photo of that field, it was full of rubbish

During construction they were built of concrete, I clearly remember the shuttering going up as they prepared to pour the cement I had never seen that before.

  • @bigdave95uk I'm kind of sad that they are going. They've been there all my life, and like Old Caley, I dont think the houses are the issue. Although as stated by GS500E 1994, it'll probably be cheaper knocking them down and rebuilding them than refurbishing them. It's sad, because somebody has a sign in their windows saying "we are not moving". Ultimately, its their home and all the memories that are being demolshed. They don't have a say and somehow that seems wrong. Thanks for your reply ;-)

  • I remember them being built, early 60s

  • @bigdave95uk I'm wondering what was there before they were built? I'd guess a field or just an area of wasteland? It'd be interesting to see some old photos from the town back in that era if anybody has any.

  • I thought they were a girl band ' The Maisonettes '.

The only reason this is here is because you couldnt find the exit back onto flemming terrace, livingston terrace, dickson drive.

Do what I do and cut across the grass ;-)

  • @2wheelsteve .......And I guess I did look lost driving around there! To be honest, I can't find my socks in the morning without my satnav, so you're probably right!

  • @bliss661 Before I was born ;)

  • Our first house is in this - it's the upstairs balcony at 3.30 into the video. We moved out of there in 1981.

  • @2wheelsteve Believe it or not, there was a band called The Masonettes in the early 80's formed by a man called Lol Mason (Mason...Masonettes, get it?). remember Heartache Avenue? Prior to that he was in a band called City Boy, who were famous for 5705, and The Day The Earth Caught Fire.

  • @MM6ISM Sadly many undesireables do live there but it's unfair to tar the people who do look after their houses with the same brush. There's decent people in all areas, even some of the worst.
