you can try and understand it by reading this:

Dean sold his soul and after that goes missing. Sam talks to Bobby and Bobby tells him that Dean will show up sooner or later, and that Sam should keep hunting and keep The Winchester name alive. And Sam takes his advice. But while hunting Sam sees what appears to be the ghost of Dean. And everytime he tries to ask questions the ghost dissapears. After hunting solo for almost three months, Sam finally finds himself waking up in bed only to see his brother standing by the sink complaining that he had been sleeping for like a day now.

But was it all really just a dream?
