Yes, you are correct, thank you. I did this video for our members of our research group to see if there was a cheap, and quick and dirty way to achieve similar results with a standard led. This goes against my normal quest to get as much light as possible from as little power as possible, which is why I don't use shades on any of my home lights.

Depending on how you want the light you can get a "straw-hat LED" which emit the light with even brightness in 180 degrees (forward and at the sides. If you want the light going only at the sides you need an "inverted LED". And lastly standard super bright white LEDs do come in diffused package and is easy to come by.

you know what you could try. Try mounting the LED on the end of an pease of plexi glas. then sand the plexiglass. That will give of an nice white glow i think :)
would be cool with an pease of plexi glas for mousepad or something. just mount 4leds in each corner then sand it and make the whole thing glow. Also i think the sanded would make more mice work better. And the mice slide allot easyer on glas then the cloth ones :)
Well, and you know that, IMO you get the same amount of light with both. They are not just beamed or focused the same. And that comment on my part doesn't bring anything new.
But, and this is my point, when sanding the LED surface, you create random and uncontrlable internal reflections. I beleive that more light "pisses" via the back of the LED.
An ultra-white painted PCB, should help a little. Only a good photo light-meter could tell the difference then. My 2¢.

Yes, I agree that you are probably correct. Since the back of the LED was not modified in any way, more light probably leak out from that area. Thanks for your comment.

Thank you for your comment. I do appreciate it. I don't like how the light output is cut back a bit, but there may well be a good compromise in here somewhere. What I should do is to do this to a group of LEDs and see what that looks like.
