  • If Earl Weaver had a Hof caliber relief pitcher from say 1968 to 1982,I mean a shut down 7th inning on guy like Rollie Fingers,Goose Gossage,Sparky Lyle,John Hiller,Dan Quisenberry,Bruce Sutter,Lee Smith,Randy Myers,Kent Tekulve,or even a young Al Hrabosky his orioles would have won at least 11o games every season he managed those teams. His O's had no closer in 1974 to 1979 in Eddie Watt,Don Hood,Bob Reynolds,Dyer Miller,Dick Drago, and the lousy Don Stanhouse who nearly gave Earl a heart attack

  • How about the 1977 season, when Earl weaver lost reggie Jackson,Bob Grich and 20 game winner Wayne garland to the rival teams with money to blow, yet he found himself in first place at the all star break with a record of 60-39 and wound up loosing the division by two games to the Yankees despite winning 97 games.Weaver did it with an outfield of Slow kenny Singleton,Al Bumbry,Pat Kelly,Carlos Lopez,Andres Mora and larry Harlow. His catchers couldnt hit, neither could his shortstop Belanger(.224).

  • Beautiful- game starts at 7:35 and Weaver is ejected about 7:37...

  • @loyaldude10. He also utilized the radar gun and computer use of players from every team and how they hit in situations in certain innings against certain pitchers. For instance, Mark Belanger, a poor hitter, hit .244 against Nolan Ryan but hit about .500 from the 7th inning or 8th inning on. The point is when the 8th inning came, Earl left him in instead of lifting him for a pinch hitter.

  • He was right about one thing, he was inducted in to the Hall of Fame.

  • @rayjr62 The Orioles and Pirates had baseballs first and third best records in baseball from 1960 to 1983 and met in the world series a couple times. Now the Orioles have had 13 straight loosing seasons (AL record) and the Pirates have had a major league record 19 straight loosing seasons..The common denomenators name is Syd Thrift who was the Pirates GM from 1982 to 1996 and the Orioles GM from 1998 to 2005.Syd Thridt should be in the hall of shame next to Denny McLain,Dave Kingman,Jose Canseco.

  • @cmf43210 A sad epitaph for a once great franchise. 40 years ago, when you talked top to bottom, everyone inside baseball knew that the 2 best franchises were the Orioles and the Dodgers. It's not that way anymore.

  • @rayjr62 Just imagine McNally,Palmer,Cuellar,Dobson,Torrez,Grimsley,McGregor,Flanangan,Steve Stone,Rudy May,Garland,Alexander,Dennis Martinez, had a closer like Rollie Fingers or Sparky Lyle to enter in the late innings and shut the door.Davey Johnson had Randy Meyers succesfully close 45 out of 46 games in 1997.Sparky Anderson had Willie Hernandez successfully close 35 out of 35 in 1984.Just imagine Earl Wever bringing in A Bruce Sutter after his team led after seven innings???

  • @loyaldude10 Earl Weaver knew how to use speed. His 1973 Orioles set a major league record for having ten players with over 10 stolen bases each!!!Al Bumbry,R.Coggins,Baylor,Blair,Rettenmund,Tommy Davis,Belanger,Grich,Earl Williams and Motton. To this day that record stands!!!His team didnt hit well (.228) or score runs in 1972 so Earl Weaver unloaded Oates,Johnson,Buford and promoted as much speed as possable and proceeded to win 97 games in 1973,the most in the major leagues.

  • @TheLimpwristed Agreed- If the Orioles had a monster closer back then I think the story of the Orioles would have been totally different.

  • Man this was baseball. Not the shithole Orioles of today. No matter what every team had a FRANCHISE player. An Oriole who lived in Baltimore and loved the town. I always said when Cal Ripken retired that would be it and it is true. I can't even name one stinking player on that team, they are the fucking Cleveland Browns of baseball.
