If you have already seen this video on my other channel, thanks very much for watching.

If you think this sounds boring, it's meant to be (honest)! Well, it only really uses one chord.

Although the music is very short, I have used some of the common minimalist techniques of Steve Reich. In the first part there are 2 ukuleles playing which play notes of the C major scale and gradually creep out of phase with each other. When they get back into phase a third ukulele enter with a melody which also employs syncopated notes from the C major scale. There is no particular time signature. The piece ends with an explosive octave harmonic chord using the notes G, C, E and A.

  • Absolutely superb Ken, really well done - thankyou.

  • Thanks very much.

  • ...and the start of it reminds me of Music For 18 Musicians

  • I think that was sort of intentional. I wanted to try a little bit of phasing. So far the longest piece I've done is only about 5 mins. And they're just improvised experiments at the moment. My latest one is a bit more polished. And I shall be doing a longer, more thought-through piece.

  • Well Ken, you beat me to the first Reichian ukulele piece. I was going to try one too. Excellent stuff!

  • Sorry Gus. The idea came to me a few weeks back when I was teaching minimalism to a GCSE group. If Reich can use the marimba, why not the ukulele?

  • Glad you like it Tony. I do the longer version when I get chance. I think the YT limit is 10 minutes, but I believe there is a way of getting around that (not sure).

  • This is a fantastic peice of music. I would love to hear an extended version.

  • Thanks.

  • Very nice, loved the harmonic at the end, didn't expect that!
