New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo signed the bill allowing same-sex couples to wed making New York the sixth state in the nation to legalize gay marriage. Seth Doane reports.

@bxlxix69 Nearly all (if not all) states require licensing and registration for a marriage to be legally formed. If a religious institution performs a purported wedding without a licence, then the marriage is not formed in the eyes of the law. The religious institution could well argue that the couple is married in the eyes of G-d, but the fact of the matter is that more progressive religions have been performing religious same-sex marriages for some time in any event.

@bxlxix69 The law of New York deals only with the legal formation of marriage and the legal consequences thereof. It does not deal with whether G-d recognises these marriages as "holy matrimony". Of course, people are free to have religious weddings if they wish and religious institutions are free to decide what they regard as "holy matrimony". This is the case for all couples, whether heterosexual or homosexual.
