Drafted by the U.S. Army just before the start of World War II, Rooney was sent to London in 1942 where he began writing for the Stars and Stripes newspaper.
In the spring of 1945, the Allies began liberating the Nazi concentration camps. Traveling with the First Army into Germany, Rooney was among the first group of American reporters to witness firsthand the conditions suffered by thousands of people in Buchenwald.
