One of the biggest challenges for beginner triathletes or people new to swimming is mastering your turns when swimming laps in the pool. Some use "open turns" while others use "flip turns".

USAT Developmental Coach of the Year 2007 and host of the hugely popular "Triathlon Training Series" , Ian Murray takes you through a simple progression to help you perfect your turns.

This easy to follow triathlon training tip video segment will help make your swim workouts that much better. Pretty soon you'll be challenging water polo players at the pool. Don't forget that it does matter what type of pool you use for training for your triathlons, aquathlons, Ironman races, 70.3 races, etc.

This video is an excerpt from 'Swimming for Triathletes', Disc 2 in the "Triathlon Training Series".

  • what am i doing wrong if i get water in my nose everytime i flip?

  • If you take a breath just before you flip then lightly exhale through your nose during the flip that should keep any water from entering your nose.

  • Do u have the dvd in spanish? Or only in english?

  • English only at this time. Thanks for your interest.

  • Nearly died when i tried to do this :P

  • I dont know what am doing wrong but am always on ma belly no matter what stroke

  • When you do an open turn you're supposed to touch the wall with BOTH hands and not just one or it will be Disqualified.

  • really helpful video!!!finally learnt a flipturn...!!!!

  • So many new pool swimmers could benefit from an actual side flip. Watch this swimmer and see how when he finishes his flip he's not on his back? Actually he swims to the wall and begins his flip on his right side. When he hits the wall, he ends up with left ear pointing to the ceiling. This means he will only have to readjust to begin swimming 1/2 of a turn. Don Schollander made the turn popualr in the late 1960's.

  • Thanks! I'll keep the "T" thing in mind! I'm always off a little bit. You might just have help a swimmer get better for regionals!

  • I keep turning sideways when I flip so I end up looking at the other wall. How do I prevent that?

  • best flip turn lesson on youtube..thanks :)

  • his flip turns are quite crooked, is there a reason for that?
