I'm sorry to hear that you feel dehumanized.

The sign you are talking about is also a "bandha" where one puts their middle finger(Fire), thumb(Earth), and ring finger(Metal) together to bring protection from harmful spirits... These elements are assigned to those fingers in the school of the Wu Xing. So while you're not necessarily wrong, it still all comes down to our perspective of things, because the way people usually do it isn't the same as putting the tips of those three fingers together.
