Ntoula m' (= my beloved Ntoulas) - Xanthippi Karathanasi

Traditional song from Macedonia and specifically from Chalkidiki, in Greece.

This is an Easter song, a sad one though, dedicated to Ntoulas who, while all people are celebrating the Resurrection, is detained in prison.

Xanthippi Karathanasi grows up in a environment full of sounds, the youngest and most effervescent among the four children of Apostolis and Helen Karathanasi, a couple that constitutes the best singers and entertainers of their village for a lot of years. In a environment where the local macedonian - chalcidician tradition of the family is kneaded with the freshness and the genial character of the Asia Minor refugees, the dialect and the way they were singing. And the signs of this effect become early obvious for Xanthippi. It must have been the autumn of 1961, when she was heard for the first time on the radio station of Thessaloniki, thereafter the flattering comments on her voice made her widely known. In this climate Xanthippi, the youngest in the team of the traditional song's singers in the radio station of Thessaloniki, has a frequent radio presence in the period 1961-1964, when she is distinguished particularly for her interpretation in the slow, sedentary songs from Macedonia and mainly from Chalkidiki, in spite of her young age. Then she also makes her first discography appearance, with four 45 rpm discs. Consecutively she collaborates for a small period with the Lyceum of Greek Women. In 1970 she wins the first award in the traditional songs festival in Dijon, France, while she moves permanently in Athens. In 1971 takes part with Chronis Aidonidis in a series of concerts of the Greek Tourist Organization on traditional songs in the Odeon of Herodes Atticus. It is the occasion when the discographic companies discover the talent of Xanthippi, approach her and propose a collaboration.

Η Ξανθίππη Καραθανάση μεγάλωσε σ' ένα περιβάλλον γεμάτο από ήχους, η μικρότερη και η πιό ζωηρή ανάμεσα στα τέσσερα καλλίφωνα παιδιά του Αποστόλη και της Ελένης Καραθανάση, ενός ζευγαριού που είναι μάλλον οι καλύτεροι τραγουδιστές και γλεντιστές του χωριού τους για πολλά χρόνια. Σε ένα περίγυρο όπου ζυμώνονται η τοπική μακεδoνίτικη - χαλκιδικιώτικη παράδοση της οικογένειας, με την φρεσκάδα και τον πρόσχαρο χαρακτήρα των μικρασιατών προσφύγων, την διάλεκτο και τον τρόπο που τραγουδούσαν. Και τα σημάδια αυτής της επίδρασης έγιναν εμφανή από πολύ νωρίς για την Ξανθίππη. Πρέπει να ήταν φθινόπωρο του 1961, όταν ακούστηκε για πρώτη φορά στον ραδιοφωνικό σταθμό της Θεσσαλονίκης, οπότε τα κολακευτικά σχόλια για τη φωνή της την κάνουν ευρύτερα γνωστή. Σε αυτό το κλίμα η Ξανθίππη, η μικρότερη από την ομάδα του παραδοσιακού τραγουδιού στο σταθμό της Θεσσαλονίκης, έχει μια συχνή ραδιοφωνική παρουσία την περίοδο 1961-1964, όπου διακρίνεται ιδιαίτερα για την ερμηνεία της στα αργά, καθιστικά τραγούδια της Μακεδονίας και κυρίως της Χαλκιδικής, παρ' όλο το νεαρό της ηλικίας της. Τότε κάνει και την πρώτη της δισκογραφική εμφάνιση, με τέσσερα μικρά δισκάκια 45 στροφών. Εν συνεχεία συνεργάζεται για λίγο με το Λύκειο των Ελληνίδων. Το 1970 αποσπά το Α' βραβείο σε φεστιβάλ Δημοτικού τραγουδιού στην Ντιζόν της Γαλλίας, ενώ κατεβαίνει να μείνει μόνιμα στην Αθήνα. Το 1971 παίρνει μέρος μαζί με τον Χρόνη Αηδονίδη σε μιά σειρά συναυλιών του ΕΟΤ με δημοτικά τραγούδια στο Ωδείο Ηρώδου του Αττικού. Είναι η ευκαιρία όπου οι δισκογραφικές εταιρίες ανακαλύπτουν το ταλέντο της Ξανθίππης, την πλησιάζουν και της προτείνουν συνεργασία.
